I believe she spent a lot of summers in Canada (New Brunswick?) but I really don't know anything about her history. I was really impressed by how thoroughly she captured the sense of place. I was completely taken back to the narrow streets of the Old Town, and loved how she wrote about the presiding influence of the church.

I hope you can find a copy of the Friskney book. Although it's what you might call a niche book, I know you'll enjoy it just as much as I did.Lee-Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04270201592696284797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1092941621582901334.post-78728727323370067212014-01-18T17:06:40.204-07:002014-01-18T17:06:40.204-07:00Thank you! There is a lot to ponder, including, as you say the profound isolation of the colonists. It is really hard to imagine how secluded they were, but the book gives a wonderful feel of how Quebec was an outpost in a vast unknown wilderness.Lee-Annehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04270201592696284797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1092941621582901334.post-92013139773129685182014-01-18T17:02:34.816-07:002014-01-18T17:02:34.816-07:00It is good to hear that you can identify with my s...It is good to hear that you can identify with my search for home, Bellezza.

My sister went to a psychic a long time ago and asked about me. The psychic told her that I was "out of synch with the energy of the city in which I live." I've never found a better way to describe the way I feel! Luckily, I have found a tribe of friends here who have helped me to create the stories that put down the roots that connect me. The first I read of hers was for a bookclub (Song of the Lark, which I loved) maybe ten years ago or so. I've read a couple of others since, but this one does sound particularly appealing. (And thanks, too, for reminding me about the Friskey book...I've got to track that down!)Buried In Printhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00808249065026802365noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1092941621582901334.post-42228332113697944102014-01-17T04:02:32.257-07:002014-01-17T04:02:32.257-07:00Despite having lots of Willa Cather on Mount TBR, ...Despite having lots of Willa Cather on Mount TBR, I still have to read one - and must do so soon! There are many things that you highlight in your commentary that make me believe that I would like this book.

As you allude to, for many Europeans living in remote areas of the the New world in 1697, the sense of isolation must have been profound.

1697 must have Brian Josephhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15139559400312336791noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1092941621582901334.post-7626033057553839222014-01-16T18:55:09.130-07:002014-01-16T18:55:09.130-07:00I loved this book when I read it, too, which surpr...I loved this book when I read it, too, which surprsied me because I felt no great affection for My Antonia when I read it in high school. This novel, however, is really quite lovely. I especially connect with your phrase here: "strongly identify with the immigrant's quest for "home." Maybe it's not a universal theme, but it is a recurring theme in my life. I always feel a stranger in this land, somehow not quite belonging. Well, it's a dark and stormy night, and I certainly don't mean to sound forlorn, but I just relate to that aspect in your review.

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I send healing thoughts your way. xoBellezza https://www.blogger.com/profile/18073864187188953633noreply@blogger.com
